Local, Innovation Cluster ag-tech client and recent Bears’ Lair winner Entomo Farms have entered in partnership with Loblaws as of February 2018, to bring its cricket food to shelves across Canada through the President’s Choice label.
Brothers Darren, Jarrod and Ryan Goldin founded Entomo Farms with a mission to provide healthy, sustainable food options that provide benefits to both people’s health and the environment. The family was raised with a global awareness and passion for nature, leading to their path to start cricket farming in Norwood, Ont.
“We hope through this partnership with Loblaws, cricket food will become more mainstream in grocery outlets in Canada as we move towards a more sustainable future,” says Jarrod Goldin.
Eating insect protein helps deter the world’s global environment crises, while preserving food, water and natural resources. Farming crickets requires an extremely low amount of feed and water and emits less greenhouse gases and ammonia while producing large amounts livestock. However, only about 33% of the world’s society implement eating insects into their daily routine, according to Entomo Farms website.
With this new partnership, cricket food will now be more accessible and common throughout Canada’s grocery outlets. Those interested in switching to insect food will notice crickets provide a good source of vitamin B12, Iron and Calcium, as well as being an excellent source of protein, zinc and magnesium. The powder can be added to smoothies, sauces, chili, curries, baking batters, and more, since it doesn’t have a strong flavour.
