Peterborough startup Lab Improvements have partnered with the Peterborough Regional Health Centre to develop SlideTrack, a first of its kind digital benchtop system that saves time for lab staff and speeds up patient diagnosis.
The SlideTrack automates the filing and sorting of more than 125,000 slides at PRHC each year – an amount that used to be filed by laboratory staff manually. The robotic system is the first of its kind in the world, and saves hours previously spent going through tissue and cell sample slides.
The SlideTrack’s success has PRHC and Lab Improvements believe the system has potential to improve patient care around the world.
The project was made possible by PRHC and Lab Improvements receiving a $25,000 development grant and a $15,000 procurement grant from Ontario’s MaRS innovation hub.
Lab Improvements is also a client of the Innovation Cluster, the not-for-profit organization that assists technology-based startups in the formation and growth of their companies. Through being a client of the Cluster, Lab Improvements was able to make essential connections in the community and enhance their product development.
“Lab Improvements have been a client of the Innovation Cluster – Peterborough and the Kawarthas since 2014 and have come a long way since their idea was conceived,” says John Gillis, President & CEO of the Innovation Cluster. “The SlideTrack will now put them on the world stage of Health Care.”
