During the week that celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD), Manjit Minhas, Canadian entrepreneur, television personality and venture capitalist will be the next trailblazer to take the EC Talks stage. The Innovation Cluster and lead sponsor Fleming College is excited to welcome her talk on Empowering Women: Achieving Business Success in Male-Dominated Industries on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at 6 p.m. at Showplace Performance Centre.
EC Talks allows Peterborough and the Kawarthas to recharge with the best in tech and innovation, expand knowledge and network with global disruptors to blaze new trails. Manjit Minhas, best known for her appearance on Dragons’ Den, has been able to do what few ever thought possible—break into the notoriously competitive and male-dominated beer and spirits industry.
“As the region grows as an entrepreneurial hub, we have seen a clear need to bring in global disruptors,” says John Gillis, President and CEO of the Innovation Cluster.
Minhas Breweries, Distilleries and Winery, which Minhas co-founded with her brother Ravinder, is now the 10th largest brewery in the world. She is now the sole owner, President, and CEO of the company. With her background in engineering, Minhas strives to minimize the environmental impact of her company, producing beer using the least amount of cleaning and water treatment chemicals, gas, electricity, and water.
In a Global News interview in 2019 for IWD, Minhas talks about current barriers in her field, saying “Only 16 per cent of Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises are majority-owned by women, and this percentage is even lower among women who own high-growth or exporting firms. Creating supports and services that break down barriers and provide women with greater access to capital, networks and information will help increase these numbers, and that’s what we need to start doing more. We also need to engage men in the conversation.”
As Minhas is set to speak during the week of International Women’s Day, the entrepreneur has received awards including Canada’s Women Executive Network’s Top 100 Women Entrepreneurs, Profit’s Top Growth Entrepreneur, Chatelaine’s Top Entrepreneur Woman of The Year, and was recently named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, a distinction honoring outstanding Canadian leaders.
“Fleming College is proud to partner with the Innovation Cluster and welcome Manjit Minhas to Peterborough in celebration of International Women’s Day,” says Fleming College President Maureen Adamson. “Fleming has a pivotal role to play in moving the dial and improving resources available to young women. Our continued partnership with the Innovation Cluster blaze new trails for women in our community, providing the education needed to thrive, and the resources needed to get there.”
Fleming College students will have free access to the event, and general attendee tickets cost ten dollars. The event will follow with a photo-op for all attendees, and a cash bar will be available throughout the event.
