FOSTERING RESEARCH PARTNERSHIPS AT THE 2011 INTERNATIONAL GOAT SYMPOSIUM
The Centre of Excellence for Goat Research & Innovation (COE) will soon release a call for proposals requesting funding applications from industry/academia collaborations; and is attending the 2011 International Goat Symposium to cultivate research projects between sector professionals and scientists.
The vision of the COE is to promote the growth and competitiveness of the goat and small ruminant sectors by servicing consumer demands for consistent, quality products in the marketplace. The Centre will facilitate the coordination of research activities in the goat sector and will enable economic research to support the industry’s competitiveness and sustainability.
The Centre recently received $485,000 from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) to enhance the market for goat dairy products, meat and fibre by elevating the level of research and understanding about the genetics, animal health and products in order to serve the growing ethnic markets in Canada.
The Centre of Excellence for Goat Research and Innovation is an industry led partnership between the Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster, Trent University, the University of Guelph, Ontario Goat and the Ontario Dairy Goat Cooperative. Research will be undertaken by Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario and the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. It is anticipated that as partnerships are established, additional research locations will become involved. The COE activities are coordinated at the Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster.
“The International Goat Symposium is the gathering place for those interested in growing the goat sector,” stated Jennifer Haley Executive Director, Ontario Goat. “The impacts of the research that will be conducted are expected to have global implications. Through leading edge research in key areas of activity the Centre will support the industry’s competitiveness and sustainability.”
