The Innovation Cluster is also in a position to help with commercialization of intellectual property resulting from basic and applied research that is conducted at the region’s post secondary institutions. This involves providing intellectual property evaluation in association with patent agencies, access to market analyses through various partners such as MaRS Discovery District in Toronto, and assistance with patenting, licensing, and direction for potential start-up companies. Commercialization with the Innovation Cluster also involves assisting in seeking and securing funding during the pre-commercialization gap that often arises. Funding is available from various levels of government to assist in prototype development, further R&D costs, as well as administrative and market readiness costs. The Innovation Cluster provides mentoring, as it is connected to many people in both the science and business worlds that have successfully been involved in commercialization. Finally, the Innovation Cluster provides direction to capital through the Peterborough Region Angel Network (PRAN).
