Cube Clients Launch Streets of Canada Initiative

December 13, 2016 Innovation Cluster Admin

The Innovation Cluster’s incubator is a hotbed of ideas and a perfect place for entrepreneurs to collaborate on different projects! On November 27, a group of Cube clients launched a nationwide initiative to highlight innovators and entrepreneurs across the country – Streets of Canada.

In 2017, Canada will celebrate 150 years of confederation! In honour of this milestone, there are amazing initiatives taking place all over the country to celebrate what has been accomplished in those years. In the past 150 years, Canada has established itself as a peaceful, diverse, and collective country. The people, the places, the past—all one-of-a-kind, but it’s the people that bring it to life and give the word “Canadian” meaning. These people all have stories with the power to inspire and instill pride.Streets of Canada

Streets of Canada is a national initiative celebrating Canada’s 150th Birthday by sharing the inspirational stories of local business owners, artists, and unsung heroes from coast to coast. The streets of Canada are filled with small businesses, each started by someone with a unique story. These stories
matter. They are inspirational, honest, and they embody what it means to be Canadian.

Everyone has a story worth telling, and Streets of Canada’s mission is to discover and share 1,000 stories of amazing Canadians. Who they are, where they came from, what they do, what drives them, their hopes, their fears, their past, their pride. On Streets of Canada, you can get to know amazing Canadians from down the street or across the country and get involved in so many ways!

Streets of Canada is celebrating these very people by discovering and sharing their stories all across the country – you may even recognize some of the stories!

Peterborough Region Angel Network Receives Investment from FedDev Ontario for Early-Stage Businesses

October 26, 2016 The Innovation Cluster

Peterborough Region Angel Network Investment FedDev Ontario

The Government of Canada has invested in the Peterborough Region Angel Network (PRAN), a not-for-profit angel network that connects investors from the Peterborough area with early-stage companies that are commercializing innovative technologies, to help early-stage businesses get the tools they need to become more competitive and successful. PRAN has up to $300,000 to attract and retain angel investor members, increase the pool of available angel investment funds, and improve mentoring support to early-stage, high-growth companies in southern Ontario.

“FedDev Ontario funding, in addition to membership fees, enables the Peterborough Region Angel Network to pursue its mission of facilitating innovation, research and economic development. It does this through mentorship, business counsel and investment capital in early-stage regional growth companies. Importantly as well, FedDev Ontario funding has enabled the network to support and solidify a close relationship with the Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster, leading to greater outreach, visibility and more efficient resource utilization.”

– Yves Lafortune, Executive Director, Peterborough Region Angel Network

This non-repayable contribution comes from FedDev Ontario’s Investing in Business Innovation initiative and aims to make Canada a global centre for innovation. PRAN will help to create jobs, drive growth across all industries, and improve the lives of all Canadians, all in line with the Government’s Innovation Agenda. This investment also helps to foster an entrepreneurial and creative society, and grow companies; two key pillars of the Innovation Agenda. PRAN expects to attract up to 25 new angel investors, as well as up to $2.25 million in new investment for up to nine early-stage businesses.

PRAN grew its membership by 13 registered accredited investors previously when the network received $275,000 from FedDev Ontario’s Investing in Business Innovation initiative.
