YOUNG FEMALES CAN GET INSPIRED TO ENTER A CAREER IN STEAM AT MONTHLY EVENT, MENTOR MONDAYS
Mentor Mondays is a public virtual event that takes place once every month, featuring women in or entering a career in Science, Technology & Trades, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM). Mentor Mondays was created by FemSteamPtbo, a group with a vision to move the dial on Peterborough community girls entering post-secondary studies in STEAM.
Started in 2019, FemSteamPtbo has been creating awareness in Peterborough and providing opportunities for young women through events, contests and more. FemSteamPtbo is the creation of three founders influential in STEAM and reside in Peterborough – Rhonda Barnet, Dawn Hennessey and Sofie Andreou.
The Innovation Cluster is in partnership with FemSteamPtbo to support females entering technology-based businesses, and pursuing entrepreneurship as a career. The Innovation Cluster launched Women Breaking Barriers in 2020, which supports women-led companies in STEM, in line with FemSteamPtbo’s mission.
In November, the group held a STEAM Summit in partnership with the Innovation Cluster, Trent University and Fleming College. It brought over 500 grade 7 & 8 students to learn about careers in STEAM and hear from Nobel Prize winner Dr. Donna Strickland. During the event, new mentors were introduced in the summit and participated in the breakout rooms, including answering questions and sharing their story during the event. As of today, Peterborough teachers can request a mentor for educational opportunities through the website as well as join the FemSteamPtbo Mentor Live Webcast once a month. Teachers interested can reach out to FemSteamPtbo@gmail.com.
The six mentors announced include:
Robin Adamson-Agostino – Pre-Apprenticeship Carpentry Student at Fleming College
Stephanie Johnson – Recent M.Sc. Graduate in Applied Modelling and Quantitative Methods from Trent University
Sandra Klemet-N’Guessan – Ph.D. Student in Aquatic Ecology at Trent University
Elysha Pecena – Environmental Engineering Technician at Cambium Inc. B.Eng. in Environmental Engineering from Carleton University
Robyn Stout – Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technician Student at Fleming College
Jamee Ward – Pre-Apprenticeship Carpentry Student at Fleming College
During the event, the mentors share with grade 7 & 8 students how they got into their career field and explain a day in the life of that career or education. Mentors also talk about the schooling involved in entering STEAM, and the misconceptions or challenges they have faced as a woman in a male-dominated industry.
The event has allowed for classes to open up the conversation around women in STEAM and offer students of all genders the opportunity to reflect on their personal biases.
The next Mentor Monday takes place Monday, February 8th at 11am! The featured mentor is Sandra Klemet-N’Guessan from Trent University!
Our Mentor Mondays continue with Sandra Klemet-N’Guessan!
Sandra is a PhD candidate in Aquatic Ecology at Trent University. She’ll be sharing her experiences in the classroom and in the field with grade 7&8s!
